DIY Pull-Up Bar

This is a long overdue post.  Earlier this month I installed a homemade pull-up bar in my garage.

It is constructed out of 1" black steel pipe and 2"x6" boards.  I initially had my doubts about 12 screws holding up my body weight, but it feels incredibly solid.  I've jerked and yanked at it and it just doesn't budge.

The final price for supplies was somewhere between $150 and $200.  This was a little more than I was hoping to spend but well worth it for the final result.

So far I've done "Murph" and "Tabata Something Else" on it.  Looking forward to many more good workouts to come.

    1. A male-to-male coupler, which was available with the other fittings.

  2. What types of screws did you use to mount the boards to the wall studs and for mounting the pipes to boards?

    1. It's been a while, but I think they were #12s. Probably ~3" to attach the 2x6 to the wall/ceiling and then 1.5" or 2" to attach the flanges to the 2x6. Hope that helps!

  4. Will your pull up bar handle Kipping pull ups/toes to bar? Will it hold 2 people at the same time, Kipping?

    1. Yep: it handles two people kipping without budging. You can barely feel that there is another person up there with you.

  5. What are the dimensions of the bar? ie: distance from ceiling and distance from wall and total width etc.

    1. It's 2' from the ceiling, 2.5' from the wall and 7' in total width.

    1. It will easily handle them in terms of the force involved, but I didn't have enough height in my garage to really support full extension above the bar.

If you have the height, it shouldn't be a problem to extend it further from the ceiling.

    1. Sorry, I've never taken the time to write-up a full BOM.

But it's all pretty obvious from the picture. If you zoom in, you should see which kind of parts I used. Then I'd recommend a trip to the local HW store and some browsing to see what will work for you.

  8. I'm doing the same project, but instead just doing half of it, as I don't have enough space in my garage. Just went to Lowe's and spent ~$100 for all the parts, hopefully will put it together soon. Thanks for sharing and all the details about your project!
